Toothpics and Marshmallows

 During camp Nana on Tuesday, 
    the grands began their
      day exploring with...

magnets....

The grands used these materials...

marshmallows and toothpics...

and their engineering skills to construct...

a firefighter, a cube,



                                                    a spider and a house.

                         This is a fun book to incorporate with the above activity.

               Due to rain this morning, we decided to have some puppet shows.

       We made our puppet theatre out of canvas and used acrylic paints for the                
         handprints.   We hung the theatre up using a shower curtain tension rod.

              The grands took turns making up short stories using animal puppets...

 We played a game called Cobbler, Cobbler!

The grands passed an old slipper behind their backs, around the circle, while the person in the middle closed their eyes.  After the following chant the person in the middle tried to guess who had the slipper. 

                    Cobbler, Cobbler mend my shoe, have it done by half past two.

                     Cobbler, Cobbler tell me true, which of you has got my shoe?

                Pops lead the grands in a Bible story skit about David and Goliath.

The Israelites are in their tent.

David throws the stone...

and down goes Goliath!!! 

Tree climbing is always a great way to wind down camp!

On Top of Spaghetti

At camp today, we had backyard fun with spaghetti which we cooked and after dividing it up into four bowls, added food colors. 

You can use drops or gels!

       The grands used the colored noodles to create pictures.

PJ made a windy ocean with a sunshine and a fish.

Ty is creating a house in this picture.

Mia made a picture of herself and a flower.

We played a game called Spaghetti and Meatballs.

We used a colander (spaghetti) and newspaper balls (meatballs).

The grands took turns throwing the balls and catching them in the colander.

 Good catch PJ!

 Way to go, Mia!

For snack today, we used these ingredients and created...

 Notice that there are no eyes as they are supposed to be under the hair! 

The grands took some marshmallows and tested their

coordination skills!

 PJ is a good shot!

Pops lead the grands in the Bible story about how Jesus

fed the crowd of 5000...

and then he took them on a ride around the yard.  I love the black crow hat!

After we read this book, we listened to it on CD!

And then...

 the grands drew faces...

cut out the pieces, attached paper clips...

and used magnets to move the pieces around as they created faces with emotions.

Scavenger Hunt

During camp today, the grands gathered a variety of flower petals and leaves which they arranged underneath old handkerchiefs and napkins.

 Small hammers banged on top of the handkerchiefs and napkins allowed the flower petals and leaves to release their pigments (and awakened the neighbors)!

The grands thought it would be a good idea to label their work so that they could remember what was growing in the garden this summer.  We also dated their work.

Summer 2011

This book helped us to prepare for our backyard scavenger hunt!

Even though there were lots of bees, we weren't looking for honey!

The grands were given lists and  pencils and lots of assistance with reading and writing - except for PJ who is already a pro!

The list of things to find and do...

which included finding something soft...

something that can be recycled...

 and...

a worm!!!

                                       

In between the raindrops today, the grands had fun playing Mia's version of hide-n-seek!  Two people hide their eyes and count to twenty - don't forget the Mississippi's - while one person hides in the yard.  When the person hiding is found they have to pop out of their hiding place and run while the other two try to tag him/her.  The first person to tag the hider is the next person to hide in the yard.
